| Library Media Center "New Year's Resolutions" |
Most of us make at least a couple of "resolutions" for the New Year each January. Sometimes they even last until the end of January! But let's look at some of the most popular ones and apply them to our home away from home--the library media center:
- Get fit and lose weight.
This is an easy one to do in the library media center! Make your collection "lean and mean" by aggressive weeding this year! Study after study supports the claim that circulation goes UP after weeding. Make 2007 the year to trim your collection and make it more attractive and useful to students!
- Spend more time with family and friends.
And who is your family at work? Staff and students! We know the amount of paperwork you deal with every day. But make it your priority to TALK to students and staff daily about what they want and need in your center.
- Give up bad habits.
Let's not go there! But how about a reverse approach? Take up GOOD habits at work! Like offering to get Interlibrary Loans for students and staff! Don't wait to be asked. Suggest it and make it a regular part of library media expectations.
- Learn something new.
Another language? Additional technology skills? Learning something new that can help you at work will both spark your enthusiasm AND benefit your library media center!
- Get organized.
Recognize that you will not be the LMS at your school forever. Someone will follow you and bless you (or not) because of your well-organized files (paper and electronic). Purge your files of outdated and unnecessary information. Make sure you DO have information on the daily, monthly, and yearly activities of your center.
