Why Weed World War II?

The year 2005 marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and the first anniversary of the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. Recognizing that under five million U.S. veterans now survive of the more than 16 million who served in those war years, a flurry of commemorative events, educational activities, and publishing is currently taking place. There are wonderful new and interesting titles available to supplement or replace aging titles in school library collections.

Check 940.53 (World War II, 1939-1945) and 940.54 (Military History of World War II). It’s especially important to review your AV and reference collections due to the number of new AV titles and reference resources recently released. There may be some titles in the biography section that should be updated.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

world war II poster for army nurse corpsAs with any historical event, save any primary source materials that are still appropriate for the collection but reconsider titles that deal with interpretation and controversies that might have changed over the years. Don't keep "post war" accounts of WWII countries that are misleading to the current state of those countries. Be wary of keeping encyclopedias that are old, especially if located in the reference collection. Older AV titles may have the same archival photographs as newer titles, but new replacement AV titles will likely include enhanced photographs as well as reenactments and may include contrasting current views of those past locations in order to make the events more interesting to students today. Replace any "borderline" print or AV titles with some of the attractive new titles on the market now due to the renewed interest in this time period.
