| Why
Weed Asia?
With
today’s news events, your students are hearing names
of many Asian leaders, countries, cities, and regions. If
those students go to your collection for more information,
would they find information that is current or was valid
20 or so years ago? Would they know the difference?
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
 Your
first check should be the 950s (general history of Asia)
and then look at the 915s (geography and travel in Asia).
Also take a quick review of the 327s (international relations)
and the 337s (international economics). The AV, reference,
and professional collections should also be reviewed.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
Check
your collection to make sure that publications from the
1960s and 1970s are not still the core of your collection.
Information on that era still needs to be included, but
it should be in an updated viewpoint from the current perspective.
You can find new publications on the Korean, Vietnam, and
Gulf wars that should replace older titles unless they are
primary source materials.
 Travel
and description (91x) print and AV titles should not be
kept over five years. (Would YOU rely on a travel resource
from several years ago if you were taking a trip?) The solution
is not to move items from the 915s to the 950s. A different
position on the shelves won’t change the perspective
from travel to history for the reader. And our students
do strike out on their own to see the world. Don’t
give them travel ideas that can be misleading and even dangerous.
