Why Weed Canada and Mexico?

images of MexicoThe United States is fortunate to have good neighbors: Canada and Mexico. But current events and security concerns demand that we look at our national borders and points of entry. With a 4,121 mile Canadian border and a 2,062 mile Mexican border, it is essential that we know our neighbors and provide up-to-date information for our students.

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Most of your check will center in the 900 section: 971 (history of Canada), 972 (history of Mexico), and the travel and description numbers for both (917.1 and 917.2). Also check both countries in your subject index to see what titles you may have in other classifications such as crafts and music. Finally, review the AV collection -- and make that decision to get rid of filmstrips, all of them!

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

Many of the titles (both print and AV) from the 1960s through the 1980s have a ‘rose colored’ and simplistic look at Canada and Mexico. images of CanadaThis can be confusing as well as misleading to students hearing current discussions on the news of security issues, visa restrictions, and border patrols. It also does a disservice to both countries to not acknowledge their diversities and current conditions. Pay special attention to the national news regarding Canada and Mexico for a few days, then look at your collection. See the difference? Weed any titles that seem superficial, patronizing, or inaccurate.

Since the publishing market follows demand, there are limited replacement titles for Mexico and especially for Canada. That’s no excuse to keep outdated titles when there are many other sources of current information in other formats such as the Internet. Weed your outdated titles, know your print and AV collections, and be prepared to fill those collection gaps as new titles are released.
