| Why
Weed Computer Science?
A
world that calmly accepts the fact that a computer is obsolete
shortly after purchase should have no problem understanding
the need to weed the subject area of computer science in
library media collections. Dated computer literature is
just as obsolete as a piece of discarded hardware.
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
Locating
materials for weeding review in your collection on the topic
of computer science is not as simple as walking to a single
area of shelving. If you have an automated catalog (like
SUNLINK) with keyword search, truncation, and publication
date searching, you will have an easy time locating everything
on computer science in your collection. Materials will be
found in these Dewey areas: 004-006s, 370s, 620s, 650s,
and 790s. Even
fiction books may also have some misleading information.
Also remember to check your audiovisual materials and vertical
file.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
Consider
the types of computer hardware in your school. Are there
older Apple IIe (or the equivalent) computers still in the
classrooms? If so, you may want to retain materials on the
use of those computers. Weed books and AV materials pertaining
to hardware and platforms no longer in your school. Consider
the curriculum. What technology skills are integrated into
the curriculum? What technology skills are the students
and faculty expected to master? Does your school offer classes
in computer programming, and if so, in which programming
languages? Weed items that no longer support the curriculum.
Consider checking with the faculty sponsors of the computer
club to help identify items that are too outdated for the
computer hobbyist. The outlook for careers in computers
has changed dramatically. Eliminate titles that support
out-of-date software titles and versions. Beware of computer
history books that stop with the invention of the personal
computer. Even books about networks, email and the Internet
may be outdated if they are more than 2 or 3 years old.
