Why Weed Conflict Management?

two students arguingThe nature and ramifications of 'conflict' in today's schools has changed drastically in the past few years. You should carefully examine materials published as recently as only five years ago. This won't be that difficult of a job because you probably have very few older items on this subject. But if you do, now is the time to replace them--there are many new and relevant titles in current publication. Another sign of the times.

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Any old print materials on conflict management in your general collection will be found in the 302s and 303s. You are more likely to find out-of-date materials on this subject in the professional and AV collections.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

student getting bullied in school hallwayWe all experienced bullying and teasing in our school years, but none of us experienced the school violence that today's students are exposed to--either personally or via the media. Check all your titles on this subject to be sure they include appropriate responses for today’s ‘victims’ of bullying.

Over the years, there have always been students who have come from less than ideal home situations, but a growing number of today's students are experiencing home lives that include even more stress and violence. We are also seeing students from families that seem to be more indifferent or detached from their children's lives and emotions. Try to provide current and realistic materials that will assist those students in dealing with their anger and aggressive behavior.

Professional and AV collections will probably have materials that don't apply to today's problems. If unused, they are dead weight on the shelves--if used, their information could cause more harm than help. Weed them.
