| Why
Weed Cuba?
Cuba
is in the news today. Across the country, but especially
in Florida, there is renewed interest in Cuba. Both print
and broadcast news carry almost daily developments on the
Elian Gonzalez case in Miami. Music stores, movie theaters,
and radio stations reflect the new infatuation with Cuban/Latino
music. Travel buffs are eagerly awaiting the anticipated
opening of travel to Cuba. These are all very current developments.
Is your collection current enough to support this new interest?
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
The
history of Cuba is found in the 972.91 section. Travel in
Cuba is 917.291. Materials dealing with Cuban foreign relations
is located in 327s. Also check your biography section. In
addition to your regular shelving area and reference section,
it is very important to examine and weed your AV collection
to get rid of those old travel filmstrips and videos on
Cuba.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
For
those of us old enough to make a memory connection between
the names of Fidel Castro and Jack Paar, the current news
events on Cuba are understandable. However, none of your
students and very few of your teachers are in this group!
Unfortunately, it is possible that some of your collection
titles on Cuba are of that era. Check titles classified
in the history section to see if they are updated to at
least the last decade. While the material face of Cuba might
seem to be frozen in time by the trade embargo, your AV
titles should not be any more than ten years old. There
are many highly recommended AV titles on the market now
that will give your users a true picture of life in Cuba
today. Biographies of Cuban leaders and personalities should
be current enough to reflect the benefit of historical hindsight
and reevaluations. How old is YOUR biography of Fidel Castro?
Finally, look at your travel materials on Cuba very closely.
Between the renewed interest and the softening travel restrictions
on Cuba, you should retain only the most current titles.
