Weed Dating and Courtship?
The
age-old rite of dating. The month of February with images
of hearts and flowers. Some things never change--or do they?
 While
older titles on dating debated 'going steady,' today's publications
may focus on the need to discuss 'date rape.' The dating
scene has changed, and so should your collection.

Titles
on dating and courtship will be scattered across the 100s,
300s, and 600s. Start with the 306s (sociology), 362s (dating
violence) and 392s (customs). Move on to the 646s (personal
living) and then to the 177s (ethics). Do a subject search
to find titles hiding in other classifications. The AV (toss
those old filmstrips!) collection should also be reviewed.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
The
dating scene of 20 years ago (and that was 1982!) was much
different from today. In checking the content of titles
on dating, focus both on what is included and what is missing.
Any discussion of sexual involvement must be up-to-date
with current dangers. The social scene of today includes
drugs (such as Ecstasy and 'Roofies') that were unheard
of in earlier years. Types of dates have changed over the
years: from drive-in movies then to all-night raves now
- and all the variations in between. Violence in relationships
may not have been an issue discussed in earlier years, but
it must be now.
 Gender
slant should also be considered. Older titles may give the
impression that a girl's objective must be to 'get a man
and get married.' More recent titles will stress the element
of choice that girls have in their lives.
Even
the things that have not changed so over the years - such
as the heartache from a romantic breakup - must have a contemporary
appeal in order to reach today's troubled heart.
