Why Weed Disabilities?

Students with special needs are in all our classrooms and media centers today. young girl in wheelchairLibrary media collections should provide updated titles that promote understanding and acceptance of these students.

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Go to the 616s for titles on diseases of the nervous system and mental disorders, including speech and language disorders and impulse control issues. Also check the 155s for the psychology of children and young adults. Look in the 362s for any titles on social services available for those with disabilities. The 371s will have any titles directly dealing with disabilities and education (like mainstreaming). The AV and professional collection must also be reviewed.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

The diagnosis and identification of disabilities and disorders have evolved over recent years. For example, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is increasingly diagnosed. Asperger’s syndrome, a condition related to autism, is now an identified condition. Older titles do not have this information, new ones should. Use these keywords to quickly check the currency of existing titles.

blind man being lead by dogSince the passage in 1990 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, any title addressing social services for people with disabilities is outdated if it was published prior to 1990. Discard and replace them or turn to the web for current information.

More titles on disabilities are being marketed today to help students with acceptance and tolerance. Some of these titles are showing up in the fiction market also. Check your older titles (especially AV) to make sure the message and sensitivity are right for today’s students.
