| Why
Weed Ecology?
Everyone
recognizes ecology as one of the critical issues in the
world today, and yet sound ecological practices are not
a part of most of our everyday living habits. Students --
elementary through high school -- are more receptive to
the ecology message than any other age group. Don't let
your media collection dampen that enthusiasm.
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
Most
of the titles on ecology will be found in the 570s -- in
fact, you will probably find more old titles (with old cataloging)
in the 574s instead of the more current 577s. There will
also be some titles scattered in the 300s, such as 304s
(human ecology), 333s (land and energy economics) and the
370s (specific to education). Remember to also check the
reference section and the audiovisual collection.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
A
lot of books published in the 1970s and 1980s are still
on the shelves of school library media centers. Their content
and message may still be somewhat accurate but the style
and presentation are surely dated. Any dire warnings issued
20 to 30 years ago may reach today's students as more of
a 'Chicken Little' message instead of a legitimate concern.
There
are also new ecology issues today (such as global warming)
that are not addressed in older publications. Replace your
old titles with current recommended publications that are
up-to-date in content and contemporary in presentation.
Audiovisual
collections must be carefully reviewed also as to format
as well as content and presentation. Viewing a filmstrip
could well put a negative slant on any topic area. Discard
(in an ecologically responsible manner, of course) any outdated
AV formats!
