Why Weed Evolution?

Today, many state departments of education have removed the word "evolution" from their state curriculum standards and replaced it with more vague terminology such as "change over time." boy playing in the oceanAs sensitive as this topic is in many localities, be sure the titles in your collection are current, critically approved, educationally sound, and defendable should a challenge arise.

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Look first at 575 and then to the biography section for the bulk of titles on evolution and its important personalities. Continue reviewing all of the 570s and 590s as well as scattered titles in 170s and 230s. The reference section and the AV collection also need to be reviewed.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

The "post-Sputnik" renewed emphasis on science in the schools combined with generous federal library media funding resulted in many titles on evolution added to school media centers in the 1960s and 1970s. Court cases (such as Epperson vs. Arkansas in 1968) further supported the teaching of evolution. Publishers responded to the demand. Opponents to evolution theory (creationists, young earth creationists, and intelligent design proponents) then wrote books for this K-12 market also. In addition, more titles were marketed that approached the topic by "teaching the controversy."

Your collection might have some or all of these points of view. Critically look at all of them to see if they are still in-print (a good sign), give information in the best possible presentation, and are not relics of some past personal persuasion or gift to the collection.

gorilla at restAll grade levels will have some titles on Charles Darwin. Consider updating yours with newer and more appealing biographies and reviews of his work. Upper level grades should also have an attractive new edition of Darwin's original work, a very readable scientific work for students.

In case your teachers need support for their lessons, make sure your professional collection is current on this topic.
