Why Weed Aviation History?

Sometimes you weed a section of your collection to refresh as much as to update. The 2003 centennial celebration of the Wright brothers' famous first flight in 1903 resulted in a publishing frenzy of titles on early aviation. This is a good time to review what you have, and add the best of those new titles released for this occasion.

fighter planeSuggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Look in the 629.13s for most titles on the general subject of early aviation and the history of its development. Check this number in your reference collection as well. Much of the history of early aviation is focused on those early pioneers in the field, especially the Wright brothers and Amelia Earhart - check your biography section for works on them. Look in both the individual section as well as the collective biographies. As always, check the AV collection for any old titles (and this includes ALL filmstrips!).

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

commercial airlinersWhen looking at your general history titles on aviation, be especially aware of the title as compared to the publication date. Hopefully you won't find some "complete histories" that were published about the same time that your students' parents were born!

Biographies of Wilbur and Orville Wright should be reviewed mainly for their physical condition after years of use by students doing reports. There are so many new and attractive titles now to replace those old ones. However, if you have a copy of Fred C. Kelly's biography: The Wright Brothers, keep it because it is the only biography authorized (and reviewed) by Orville Wright. But if you have a really old copy (1943?), replace it with the 1998 edition that is still in print.

Amelia Earhart biographies should be updated due to the continuing controversy over her disappearance. War conspiracy? Aliens? Escaped to New Jersey? Make sure your titles give the full story and watch for new developments in this continuing saga.
