Why Weed Geography?

Grand CanyonYou’ve seen it in the newspapers and you’ve heard it on the news: many students in the United States today lack basic knowledge of geography. Reports from various sources point out the inability of too many of our students to find their own state on a U.S. map or locate a major world feature such as the Persian Gulf. In today’s global world, students must become more knowledgeable about geography. Can your collection give them current information in an attractive format?

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

The 910s section (geography and travel) is your target to check. Remember to check the Reference section as well as the circulating collection. This topic also seems to have many AV titles in K–12 collections, so check that area also.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

Political geography titles should be changed as often as the political boundaries and/or the names of those countries and regions change. Physical geography titles have a longer shelf life but need to be reviewed to see if the titles are in good physical shape and if the information is presented in an attractive and appealing format. In addition to books and AV titles, now is the time to apply these same standards to any globes and wall maps in your center.

globeElementary collections will have the most titles on general geography but all K–12 levels should have current titles on specific countries. Especially look for countries currently in the news to make sure you are providing updated information. The publishing market follows the news, so you will always be able to find new titles to replace outdated ones. General titles on geography at the elementary level are critical for building interest on this topic. An approach that was “fun” decades ago, may be deadly today. With the current stress on geography, you will be able to find attractive replacements. Any filmstrips you still have are almost certainly outdated.
