Why Weed HIV/AIDS?

How many titles do you have on HIV/AIDS that were published in the 1980s? That was the decade that brought us the disease name for the first time (1981), personalized it with famous names (Rock Hudson, 1985), and shocked us with the loss of a near friend or neighbor. Unfortunately, many of the books and AV materials we bought so long ago (20 plus years!) are still on the shelves of our media centers. They contain outdated information and may lead our students to think of the disease as one of their parent's generation and not theirs. Or students may watch the news and think that it is just a problem in another part of the world. But it's not something to ignore, over 5 million new HIV/AIDS cases (and 3 million deaths) were reported in 2002. Update your collection to reflect this threat.

Check the 614.5s for materials on the spread and control of HIV/AIDS as well as the 616.97s for specific information on this immune system disease. For titles on living with HIV/AIDS and services available to patients, look in the 362.1s and your biography section. It is very important to update both your reference collection and the AV titles.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

Currency of information is critical in any discussion of treatment and drug regimens for HIV/AIDS. Anything older than the advances of the late 90s should not be kept, and even these should convey the message that HIV/AIDS treatment is a rapidly changing and developing field.

Prevention of infection information has not changed that much over the years, but the faces of those most likely infected today has: from middle-class white males to today's women and minority groups. Check the style of prevention information to see that it is not dated and that any illustrations are not misleading. Also be aware that while current infections occur mainly in developing countries, many of our HIV babies (from the peak of the birth-infection years of the late 80s and early 90s) are now teenagers and they (or their friends) may be seeking out information from your collection.
