Yule make your students happy if you update this well used and loved section of the library media collection!

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Begin checking this topic at the start of your 800 section. Most titles will be found in the 808.7s (rhetoric of humor and satire), but also scan the 810s for humor that is nationality specific and also the 820s for humorous rhymes and verse. Do a quick check if you have time, but your reference section is most likely missing wit and humor. However, the AV collection should be checked.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

A lot of the humor and jokes that you thought were really funny when you were in elementary school probably would still be funny to today's kids. But, reading them out of the same book that has circulated for 20, 30, or even 40 years would not be funny. A well-loved book of jokes leads a hard life. Replace titles when the condition negates the content. Check to see if some of these old titles have been reprinted with more recent publication dates. Many have been and this is a good sign that the humor included in the title has staying power with today's students.

Review all your wit and humor books to see if they have a gender or nationality bias that you want to avoid in your collection today. Also, some topics from years ago might be outdated due to interest as well as sensitivity. Look at any illustrations as well as the text to determine the message sent by the humor.

You can bend a little and purchase at a level lower than you usually do for most topics. Your students won't be insulted. Even adults tend to enjoy some humor at a level more like their shoe size instead of their age! Relax and laugh.
