Why Weed Libraries & Librarians?

Libraries and librarians are supposed to be proficient in weeding, but are they weeding titles on libraries and librarians? You and your library media center may be modeling current professionalism, but your collection titles on that topic that could be giving a different impression.

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Check your shelves from 025 (operations of libraries) through 028 (reading and use of other information media). Also look at the 011s for any bibliographies that feature research and reference techniques. There may be only one or two titles in your reference collection, but definitely check the AV area for titles outdated in both content and format. The fiction section (and E's for lower grades) may also have titles that are neither popular or accurate in portraying libraries and librarians.

An important area to check is your professional collection, probably the home of many titles so old as to no longer be of use by today's professionals.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

This should be a very easy topic for you to weed since YOU are the expert in what librarians do now and what a modern library media center is like today. The hard part will be for you to separate sentimentally from a view of libraries that may have initially attracted you to the profession years ago. Think of what today's students should know about libraries and the profession, and remove older misleading titles from your database.

librarian using a computerMethods of library research have changed drastically in the past decades. Outdated titles must be removed to effectively teach information literacy. Developing the love of reading is not served by having unattractive titles on using books and libraries.

Replace old formats (filmstrips) with new approaches (graphic novels) and try to add titles that connect popular interest subjects to libraries, books and reading.
