| Why
Weed Mathematics?
When
is the last time you purchased a really good book or AV
item on mathematics? When is the last time you read a report
on American students lagging in math skills? Your
collection is not to blame, but maybe an aggressive weeding
and replacement plan would help spark some student interest
and achievement.
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
Most
of the titles on general mathematics will be found at 510.
Titles on specific branches of math will be found in the
512s-519s (algebra at 512, etc.). Those titles on math games
and recreational activities will be in the 793.7s. Professional
titles on mathematics education will be found in the 372s.
There will also be some titles scattered in the 640s-650s
dealing with consumer and business math. Be sure to also
check the reference section and the audiovisual collection.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
With
a topic area such as mathematics that is not subject to
dramatic changes in content over the years, it is easy to
allow the collection to stagnate. While content is still
a consideration - make sure you don't still have titles
on 'new math' - you will be looking more at presentation,
physical condition, and format as criteria in weeding the
mathematics titles.
Presentation
and physical condition are very important here. Old and
boring appearance translates to 'old and boring' subject
to students. New publishing trends (sidebars, etc.) are
what students look for today.
Audiovisual
collections must be carefully reviewed also as to format
as well as content and presentation. Old AV titles may serve
only to accommodate old lesson plans and not to generate
any student enthusiasm or learning. Replace the old formats
with new, and supplement with recommended web sites.
