| Why
Weed Nutrition?
Nutrition
and learning are closely linked. Poor nutrition leads to
poor school performance. Your collection on nutrition might
have stayed the same over the past years but current surveys
show that the nutrition habits of today's students have
become worse. It's time to evaluate the old titles and replace
them with new materials to reach those students.
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
The
titles on nutrition will be found across the 610s and also
in the 641s. Remember to check the reference section also.
The audiovisual collection should also be reviewed.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
Look
first at publication dates on titles dealing with nutrition.
If they were published in the 1960s and 1970s, that was
from a different world. Yes, we had "fast food" restaurants
then, but not on every corner. Yes, we had TV, but not 200
channels on cable and the Internet to surf. One thing we
did have more of in those days was physical activity --
both at school and at home. Nutrition information for today
should address this new sedentary life style.
Even
some of the basic nutrition "facts" have changed over the
years resulting in today's recommendations for less meat
and fats but more fruits, vegetables, and grains in our
diets. Examine the content of your titles on nutrition to
make sure the information is timely.
Also
look at the content of titles to see if current dietary
issues are addressed. While it is true that more and more
students today are overweight, it is also true that various
eating disorders unheard of twenty years ago impact a large
number of our students. Students need to be aware of the
dangers of today's fad diets and those eating disorders.
Discard titles that are incomplete and replace them with
new publications.
