Why Weed U.S. Presidents?

Many students are most familiar with only three presidents: Washington, Lincoln, and the current president. George Washington carring a flagIs your media collection able to fill in the gaps? Or does it stop with Johnson (1963-69), Nixon (1969-74), Ford (1974-77), Carter (1977-81), Reagan (1981-89), Bush (1989-93), or Clinton (1993-01)? Weed the outdated titles, replace with some of the many new titles on the market today, and be ready for Presidents’ Day in February!

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Start in the 973s for the historical approach to the presidency and presidents. Review the 300s for titles on the election process (320s) and the office itself (352s). Be sure to check your biography sections -- both collective and individual. Finally, review the AV collection.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

Any title that implies it is a review of ALL presidents (or first ladies) should be up-to-date. There are lots of new titles out there to help you do this. Don’t keep any thing of this nature on the shelf if it is older than five years.

Titles on individual presidents can be older if still considered an accurate and impartial account -- history can change the perception of presidents! But be especially wary of titles published during the time of that president’s term of office. It is better to have information from the perspective of the completed term. You may not want or need to have titles on every individual president. And you may want to continue to build your collection on specific presidents according to your school demand and the publication market. As an example, there are many excellent new titles on Lincoln available today.

Try to apply the same rationale to titles on the vice presidency, but be aware there are very few replacement titles on the market today.
