Why Weed Russia?

Would your students be confused if they checked out a book (or watched an AV item) from your collection on Russia and then went home to see on TV the Russian president riding in a pick-up truck in Texas with the U.S. president? Times change. National alliances change. Has your library media collection kept up with those changes?

building in RussiaSuggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

The 947s section will be your target for this topic. You may also have some titles in the 914.7s (geography and travel of Russia). As always, the AV collection should also be checked for older titles and formats.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

Russia, the worldís largest country with a history spanning 10 centuries, probably is not a large subject section in your media collection. This makes it even more important to have accurate and up-to-date information on this country that has seen dramatic national changes in the past several years. These changes make even history books obsolete if they are older than a 1990 publication date, unless they are period specific or primary source works. Keep the following Russian timeline dates in mind when you review this section for currency and completeness...

1945-1980s 'Cold War' years
1957 Sputnik launch
1962 Cuban missile crisis
1991 USSR & state communism era ends
Russian Federation created
B. Yeltsin elected 1st president of Russia
2000 V. Putin elected current president.

hammer and sickleThis is an ideal opportunity for you to collaborate with your history teachers in weeding and updating a section ó but be sure they understand that the purpose of a library media collection is to have current information to support the curriculum. If a team effort is not possible, or you need a quick review of the country, look at the current World Factbook from the CIA on the web (http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/rs.html).
