Why Weed Science Experiments?

test tubesThis is a given in the life of a library media center each year: teachers will assign science fair projects and students will come looking for ideas and assistance. Some students will be eager and others will face the assignment with dread. Serve them all with current materials. Be sure that no student takes home a book and hears a parent say: "I remember using this same book when I was in school."

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

The titles on science fair projects will be in the 507s. But you will have titles on science experiments that will be found across the 500s and 600s. You will also need to check the reference and audiovisual collection.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

Look first at publication dates on titles dealing with science experiments and science fair projects. While some experiments are "classics" across the years, the methodology and safety standards may have changed. girl looking through a microscopeIn addition to safety concerns, older titles may have dated illustrations that work against the content. And the illustrations in these older titles also often show bias as to gender and race.

Next look at the subject areas suggested by the experiments. Many students will look there first for help in deciding on their subject. Current areas of interest need to be represented. For example, yesterday's student may have been satisfied with weather topics such as cold fronts while today's student is more intrigued by the effects of El Nino and La Nina.

Finally, look at the content for suggestions on successfully demonstrating a science experiment or competing with a science fair project. While an overhead projector or a poster display might have worked 10 to 20 years ago, today's student may be more successful (and comfortable!) with a web site or a multimedia presentation.
