Weed Sports?
Titles
with sports and sports figures as a theme are especially
important to any K-12 collection in order to attract many
reluctant readers. In order to convert those reluctant readers
to lifelong readers, you have to provide reading materials
that will first attract them, then hold their interest,
and finally make them want to come back for more. Readers
who end up being disappointed with materials that are out-of-date
and unattractive will be even more reluctant to return to
the shelves and reading.
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
Most
of your sports books will be in the 796s. But you will also
have to check your biography section (both individual and
collective) for titles on sports figures. If you have your
short stories in a separate collection area, you will have
to review it also. Remember to check fiction titles and
any vertical file, reference and audiovisual materials.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
There
are several important criteria in weeding sports. The most
important of these are: accuracy, appearance, bias, and
timeliness. Accuracy is very important in sports titles.
Many readers who love sports (but not especially school
or reading!) may be experts on sports information and statistics!
Your collection in general loses credibility with these
readers when they recognize inaccuracies.
Appearance
is also very important in this area. Any popular sports
title will show wear and tear. When it looks bad - get rid
of it. Replace it with another copy or another title. Take
a hard look at titles that are older (anything over 10 years
old) but still in good physical shape - this is probably
a good sign that your readers are not interested in them!
Bias in sports materials is often gender related but sometimes
may be racially related. Be careful in keeping older titles
directed towards "girls" or "boys." Sports activities are
more and more unisex-based today. Make sure your collection
is too. And a final word on timeliness. Sports history is
fine if presented as history. If the title indicates "today"
or "modern," make sure it really is or discard it!
