| Why
Weed Stock Market?
Students
of all ages are hearing and seeing news about the stock
market, investments, and the economy: on TV, in newspapers
and magazines, and at the family dinner table. In their
personal lives there may be relatives unemployed, vacations
canceled, and family budget changes. They may look for answers
or reassurance from your collection. What would they find?
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
The
332s section (financial economics) is where you will find
titles on the stock market and investments. Remember to
check the Reference section and the AV collection.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
Many
of the titles on this topic are written from the "how
to..." point of view. But we all know that the "how
to" changes along with the market climate. What might
be the popular approach to stocks and investments in a boom
market is not recommended for other times. Look at your
titles to see if they are giving good information for ALL
times and not just for a bull or bear market. Be especially
careful of keeping titles that are older but imply currency
in the title or the approach.
Students
should have access to a historical look at past market fluctuations
and events. But those historical looks are best when made
from a current perspective unless they are primary source
materials (not often found on this topic at the K-12 level).
Look at current replacements for older titles on past boom
years and market crashes.
Older AV titles should be weeded if their dated format (filmstrips!)
or content warrant removal. Even if you cannot find an immediate
replacement, weed when the information is not current for
today's students. Tell both your print and AV vendors of
your needs and supplement with online resources from the
web if necessary until the publishing market catches up
with the demand.
