Why Weed Short Stories?

How popular are the short stories in your collection? Are they used only when required by classroom assignments? Maybe weeding out-of-date titles and adding some new high interest titles will tempt some students to browse and read this wonderful genre without that assignment in hand.

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

If your collection groups short stories in a separate location such as 'SC,' your review of titles should be concentrated there. However, you may also have some short stories in the fiction shelves or in the 800s according to the nation of origin -- locate those by searching 'short stories' in your database or catalog.

Finally, review the AV collection -- if you still have some deadly old filmstrips on this topic, weed and replace with a newer format!

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

Always be aware that any 'indexed' collection of short stories has 'immunity' from weeding unless it is in terrible physical condition! Never incur the wrath of the English teacher by discarding a source unless all stories are available in other editions. If in doubt, check with your teachers before discarding.

What you should be targeting in weeding short stories are those collections aimed at leisure reading by students. Anything on the topics of hobbies, humor, special interests, dating, growing up, or school life should be carefully reviewed to see if it is of any interest to today's students. If the book was published over 10 years ago, the answer is probably no.

Other titles to review are those short story collections with a national, ethnic, or gender focus. Look for inaccurate or misleading information, bias, or insensitive portrayals. Replace them with more current titles or do without.
