| Why
Weed Terrorism?
The
last time there was a great general interest and publishing
activity on the topic of terrorism was in the 1970s as a
response to airplane hijackings. You may still have some
titles from that era. Times have changed tragically. There
are limited new titles available now as replacements, but
you should weed this area and be prepared to purchase as
the publishing industry responds.
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
Any
titles on terrorism will probably be found in your 300s.
General works in the 301-303s, political groups in the 322s,
legal discussions in the 340s, and prevention and defense
in the 360s. But you may find them cataloged in other areas
of the 300s or even in the 900s. Check your subject indexing
to be sure. And remember to check the reference and AV collections
as well.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
If
you have any titles on hijacking, look to see if they are
based only on cases of terrorists using guns and bomb threats
with the objective of obtaining money or the release of
political prisoners. Just as the nature of hijackings has
changed, so have the sources of political turmoil that produce
terrorism. Check
to see if your titles focus on only communism and the cold
war as the terrorist threat. Methods of terrorist attacks
have also changed over the years to include even more lethal
chemical and biological weapons -- resulting in the possibility
of a crop-dusting plane creating the same amount of devastation
as a nuclear attack in past times. Past acts of terrorism
(such as Pearl Harbor and the Munich Olympics) must remain
documented for current students, but they should be updated
and accurate from today's historical perspective. Watch
for reviews of new titles to purchase to help your students
understand terrorism and be sure to have a current atlas
available for students as they track world events.
