Weed Vietnam?
Vietnam - especially the Vietnam War - continues to be in
the American news. Attention to the still controversial
war ebbs and flows over the years, with renewed interest
sparked often by some current news events. Today's situation
in Iraq and the upcoming U.S. presidential election have
resulted in a new examination of Vietnam and the war.  For
many of your students, it will be the first time they have
heard this issue in the news. Make sure your collection
offers current sources of information.
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
The base history Dewey number for Vietnam is 959.7, the
description and travel number is 915.97, and the number
for the Vietnamese War is 959.704. But you may have some
titles on the war involvement classed in the U.S. history
section under the 973.92s for that time period. The reference
collection and the AV section will also have titles in need
of review, as will the biography sections. The fiction section
may not have many titles now, but new fiction titles are
available and you might consider adding some. (Use "Vietnamese
Conflict" if searching SUNLINK or any other union database
using LC/AC subject headings.)
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
As with any historical topic, make sure you keep any original
source or local history titles such as oral histories on
the war. But critically review any older titles that imply
current analysis or perspective. Be aware of the time-line
for the war activities (1961-1975) and question any war
titles published within that time frame. The U.S. led post-war
embargo years of 1979-1994 against Vietnam and the normalization
of relations after 1995 with the western world should be
included in any general history of Vietnam. Check any favorite
older title to see if a newer edition has been published.
Students paying attention to the news may be interested
in the Vietnam War and the war record of current U.S. political
figures. Students getting their first introduction to Vietnam
and the war years via classroom AV presentations deserve
current information, not 20-year old videorecordings and
filmstrips.
