Why Weed Vocational Trades?

images of various vocational tradesGraduation time is life decision time for many high school students. Non-college bound students face even more of a life adjustment than those students continuing the formal classroom route. Accurate and current information on vocational trades (both career and "how-to" books) is very important for young people making life work decisions. Job outlooks, work environment, and training in all the trades have changed dramatically over the years. Has your collection kept pace?

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Vocational trade materials will be found throughout the 600's, but there will also be titles scattered in the non-fiction area with the specific subjects. Your fiction collection could also have titles that should be removed. In addition, check your audiovisual collection and any materials in vertical files or career collections.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

Specific criteria includes currency, accuracy, bias, and physical appearance. Currency is a prime consideration. Misleading a student into a dead-end career is a serious mistake! You can't predict the future, but you should have the most current information available. For example, do you have titles on travel agents that do not consider the impact of the Internet on these careers? You can't depend on publication date alone to judge currency, especially on titles released as new editions but still containing dated information or photographs. Accuracy is difficult to judge but just as important. If you are not sure of projections of work conditions, wages, etc. in certain vocations, find someone who can help you make those evaluations. male stylist working on a customerBias in the presentation is also a consideration. Do you have titles on car repair that only show men in the illustrations? Do the titles on nursing only show women at work? Younger readers especially need visual cues to build accurate expectations for the world of work. Finally, physical appearance still counts with readers. Discard or replace titles that are in poor physical condition or unattractive in format.
