| Why
Weed Weather?
"Everybody
talks about the weather," watches it on TV, and reads
about it. Worldwide there is a common interest in the weather
because it impacts everyones daily life. Here
in Florida we also pay close attention to major weather
events such as hurricanes and tropical storms. The interest
in weather has not changed over the years, but the science
of weather has seen many changes. Current technology has
drastically altered the way weather is forecasted and storms
are tracked. Your collection on weather will be used for
general interest as well as for curriculum support.
Suggested
Dewey Numbers to Check:
Weather
is an easy area to check for currency. Look in the 550s
to evaluate your collection. Don't forget your reference
and AV collection. If you keep a vertical file, check there
also.
Specific
Criteria for Weeding:
When
you evaluate your collection on weather you will be checking
to see if you have current weather technology represented
as well as an accurate account of past weather events and
disasters. The science of weather forecasting should include
today's radar and weather satellite technology. Weather
conditions such as El Nino are frequently in the news today,
but not in older weather books. Environmental concerns involving
the ozone layer, greenhouse effect, and pollution are issues
now recognized as having an impact on our weather, both
daily and long term. Don't be tempted to keep historical
accounts of weather events regardless of the date of publication.
Hurricane Donna may be what you recall as history, but an
elementary student should be able to read about Hurricane
Andrew! Be especially careful of any titles on meteorology
as a career. If it is over 10 years old, it is definitely
out of date and misleading. Finally,
the illustrations or visuals in any print or AV item should
be closely checked for dated appearance of equipment (such
as typewriters instead of computers) and people.
