Why Weed Women's Issues?

Women's issues is a topic that has been at the forefront for many years. So why revisit it now as a weeding topic? Because there are still many, many old titles in our collections. business womanFrom All You Can Knit and Crochet for Women to What Can She Be... career books, they are still on the shelves! What message are we giving our girls?

Suggested Dewey Numbers to Check:

Start in the 300 section: 301s (sociology), 320s (civil and political rights), 330s (labor force and finances), 340s (legal status), and the 390s (customs). Then move to the 600s: 618s (ob/gyn) and 640s (home economics and crafts). In the 700s, look at 740s (decorative arts) and the 796s (athletics). Look at your biographies (especially 920s) for updating. Also review the AV and professional collection.

Specific Criteria for Weeding:

Carefully look at any and all books directed at 'women's issues' and decide if the gender slant is still justified in today's world. While books on individual sports (track, basketball, etc.) may require a gender approach, does a book on investment? You might be better off replacing a gender specific title with a general interest approach on some topics.

Topics that still justify a gender approach (careers, life-style choices, etc.) should be evaluated to be sure that the content would be seen as encouraging to today's girls and not condescending. A valid message from 20 years ago could be more demoralizing than positive when read today.

mother and daughterGender specific topics (sex education, pregnancy, breast cancer, etc.) that are out-dated are also dangerous to have on the shelves and must be removed.

Finally, update all those collections of women achievers: both in topic and personalities.
